Book of Luke

The Book of Luke is also called the Gospel of Luke. It is a detailed account of Jesus's life, ministry, death and resurrection.

Key themes include the nature of SALVATION through Jesus. With the importance of the HOLY SPIRIT and the call to DISCIPLESHIP.

KEY THEMES of The Gospel of Luke:

  • Salvation: It emphasizes that SALVATION is for ALL people, not just Jews.  ALL, including women, the poor, the disabled and other social outcasts.
  • A Compassionate King: It portrays Jesus as a suffering servant king who has a special concern for the disadvantaged and brings RESTORATION to their lives.
  • Holy Spirit and Prayer: It frequently shows Jesus and other figures being filled with the HOLY SPIRIT and emphasizes the importance of PRAYER in the Christian life.
  • His kingdom: It shows Jesus' teaching and presents a kingdom where traditional social values are reversed, such as the lowly being lifted up and the rich being challenged.
  • His Journey: It follows Jesus' journey to Jerusalem, filled with teachings and parables about DISCIPLESHIP, money and the COST of following him.
  • Prophecy: It connects Jesus's life and mission to the Old Testament, showing how he fulfills ancient promises made to Israel and all humanity.
  • Death and Resurrection: It ends with focus on Jesus' trial, crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

The Gospel of Luke is the SOURCE for the traditional CHRISTMAS story. Every detail helps us see the significance of the HUMBLE place where our King and SAVIOR, Jesus, was born.

In NIV Luke 2:4, it tells us  4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
